Amory History

When the KCM&B Railroad laid out plans for their new Birmingham-to-Memphis line in 1887, they drew an “x” at the mid-point and created Amory  . . . truly a PLANNED community that has been the proud owner of a railroad heritage ever since! The KCM&B (later Frisco, then Burlington Northern and now Burlington Northern Santa Fe) platted a system of wide streets and avenues . . . and orderly arrangements of business and residential areas.

Now, Amory boasts of TWO railroads, plus quick, easy access to the Monroe County Airport and its 5,000 ft. lighted runway, which accomodates private planes and corporate jets, just eight miles away. The nearest commercial airport is only 28 miles away. U. S. Highway 278 runs east and west through Amory with Mississippi Highway 25 running north and south.

Amory is a great place to live, work, and worship. Its educational and medical facilities are second to none. Churches abound, and industry loves the Amory area whose people have a great work ethic. Port facilities are available with an industrial park located adjacent to the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. Industries in the Amory area include aluminum and steel tubing, industrial valves, truck body manufacturing, timber, furniture, fertilizer, and boats.

The waterway provides boaters, water skiers, and fishermen a great place to enjoy their pastimes. There are numerous public access areas with boat ramps. Bass, crappie, bream, and catfish in abundance populate the Tenn-Tom.

The Amory Municipal Library is a city owned, tax supported facility and an affiliate of the Tombigbee Regional Library. Some 25,000 volumes, including books, videos, books on tape, record albums, magazines, and newspapers are housed at the library.

Amory is home to a mammoth, ultra-modern county governmental building which houses justice court and various county offices.
